Be a Creator, Not a Consumer

It's good for you, for your work. and for the culture

You can watch the Video or read the Transcript. But the TL;DR version this week—for biz owners, homemakers, workers of all stripes, and human beings living in the Western Weird World—is this: being only a consumer of information contributes to the world we don’t want to see. But consuming carefully, then spending most of the balance of our time, attention and vitality on creating, has multiple benefits.

  1. Individual Benefit

    If we see/hear/intuit what seems like bad news and we feel anxious, fearful, or angry: odds are, as humans who have evolved over many thousands of years to survive, we end up in a bit of a stress response. We fight, flight, freeze or fawn. The chemistry of that starts rollicking around in our bodies.

    If it has somewhere to go, or something we can DO about it: we humans tend to self-regulate more easily. The chemicals we are generating for ‘survival’ get used more appropriately, as fuel for something constructive, rather than signalling us to get stuck in a stress or trauma response that contributes to longterm health issues. When we create (make something, grow something, heal, help, repair, teach, facilitate, engage) we enter into more mindful flow states that are nourishing to our bodies.

  1. Benefit to your work or biz.

    Oftentimes, the best social media content + the best upgrades to our services/products arise from where our unique work intersects the times we are living in. Allowing my regulated and generative response to this moment to inform how I help people can be incredibly potent. My point of view as it relates to what is happening NOW meets people where they are, with what they are currently thinking, wondering, and worrying about, too. (That feeling of currency and urgency can even cause a post to go ‘viral,’ although that’s not the point).

    And the new projects, services, products, supports, etc that we come up with when we let our passionate fury and grief fuel our work can sometimes end up becoming our best offerings. The caveat here are those words ‘regulated’ and ‘generative’ that I mentioned. It’s not about projecting our unprocessed emotion and wounding onto our people. It’s about channeling the digested energy of that passion into posts and projects that are client-focused. Big difference!

  2. Benefits to the culture.

    This seems like it doesn’t require much explanation so I’ll paint a word picture. Imagine a world where everyone who is currently doom-scrolling and posting outrage on their favourite platform quietly logs off and goes away to create a solution to the thing that is bothering them most, instead.

    Imagine also: the creative, generative, expansive, healing-and-wholesome human hours lost every day to scrolling someone else’s outrage. I actually find this overwhelmingly sad to think about. On the flip side, I find it incredibly joyful and hopeful to think about all of you out there, making, helping, healing, teaching, repairing, growing our way to a kinder world.
